Mary, Mother of Carmel
"The quiet presence
of Mary has accompanied Carmel in its long pilgrimage and goes with us today.
We know her as mother, sister and friend.” CHARTER OF LIFE
The hermits living on Mount Carmel, desiring to live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ, had special devotion to His Mother, Mary. Entrusting themselves to her protection, the oratory they built in the midst of their cells was dedicated to her. Mary became “lady of the place” and eventually the hermits became known as The Brothers of Saint Mary of Mount Carmel. Carmelites down through the ages have looked to Mary as their special patroness, mother, sister and friend. Mary, woman of faith, pondering God’s word in her heart, fully open to the Spirit and to God’s action in her life, is the inspiration and example for our Carmelite contemplative way of life.
“Draw us after you O Virgin Mary. We shall follow in your footsteps.”
